About this event

ephemera plural : paper items (such as posters, broadsides, and tickets) that were originally meant to be discarded after use but have since become collectibles.

The scholar Peggy Phelan once claimed that the ontology of live performance is its disappearance. It is here for a moment in time, and then it is gone. But, as Rebecca Schneider has argued, every performance also leaves remains: in the bodies of its creators; in the memories of its audiences; and in the paper trails and material detritus that attest to the different phases of its development. Ephemera is hoping to collect some of those remains as they pertain to the recent history of performance on these lands.

How to participate in Ephemera IV
On June 26 and 27, we welcome you to come by PL1422 (1422 William St, Vancouver) at any time between 12:00pm and 4:00pm to submit your materials to be archived. COVID-19 safety protocols will be observed. If you prefer, you may email digital items to ephemera@rumble.org. Please submit your digital items by June 28.

Choose up to any three items to contribute. These can be anything from any timeline! If that sounds too open ended, here’s a prompt for those who wish to use it: “How does art evolve?”

Please fill out an archiving card for each item you submit. An archiving card template and event invitation can be download here: Fillable Ephemera IV Invitation and Archive Form

About the Ephemera Project
Ephemera is an ongoing archiving project that celebrates all of the performing arts community on these lands. For Ephemera IV, we are once again reaching out to ask artists and arts organizations to contribute bits and pieces of creative materials, office work and production pieces — items that would otherwise be discarded — to a collective archive. The collection will be housed, along with Ephemera I, II and III, as part of SFU Special Collections and Rare Books. The objective of Ephemera is to gather the Vancouver Theatre community in a non-competitive way to catalogue and celebrate our shared memories and our history.

Ephemera is a series of events brought to you in collaboration with Theatre Replacement, Rumble Theatre, and SFU Special Collections. Partners for previous iterations of the event also include the GVPTA and Upintheair Theatre.
