]]> Rumble Theatre was thrilled to be one of the companies participating in Theatre Yes’s National Elevator Project, which featured short plays written for and performed in working elevators. Rumble commissioned Peter Boychuk, a local playwright and Rumble’s Interim Managing Producer, to adapt Dante’s Inferno for a five-minute elevator ride. The play, entitled #abandonhope, was a madcap tour through the Inferno, the most sought-after postal code in the afterlife. Written in the same rhyme scheme as the Inferno, the play featured, among other things, an undead tabloid journalist, an indoor hurricane, and a fistfight between Jesus and John Lennon.

  

Part One of the project, which featured plays by Catherine Banks, Meghan Coles, Rick Chafe, Ryan Griffiths, Greg MacArthur, Kenneth T. Williams and Vancouver’s own Kendra Fanconi, was produced in elevators around Edmonton from October 16 – 27, 2013.

Part Two of the project, which included #abandonhope, was performed in Edmonton from January 23 – February 2, 2014 during Workshop West’s Canoe Festival.

]]> The 2014 Directors’ Lab was geared specifically towards Vancouver-based emerging directors who want to get rigorous with the foundations of their craft, unhindered by production and scenographic considerations. Using an established text as a working model, the Lab focused on the director’s preparation process, early stages of rehearsal and assessment and critique of the work. Over five days, participants discussed principles of directing, examined and analyzed a text, rehearsed scenes with an ensemble of actors and reflected on the processes.

This new iteration of Directors’ Lab is an exciting component of Rumble’s Mentorship Program, designed to catalyze relationships between emerging and established artists and facilitate young artists’ transition to a professional career.

Lab facilitator Ron Jenkins is an Edmonton-based director and two-time Siminovitch Prize nominee. Ron has been the Artistic Director of Shadow Theatre, Fringe Theatre Adventures, and Workshop West, and is a founding member of Skid Theatre and November Theatre. He has directed at the Citadel, ATP, Vertigo, Tarragon, Factory, Passe Muraille, LKTYP, MTYP, GCTC, Concrete, Ghost River, the Cultch, Theatre Calgary, Belfry, Vancouver Playhouse, and Off-Broadway in NYC. Ron has won ten Sterling Awards as a director and playwright and the Betty Mitchell Award for Direction. He is also the winner of the 2004 Syncrude Award for Artistic Innovation.

This four-day theatre party featured a talented young company of emerging theatre artists who will direct, design, manage and perform three edgy, contemporary plays. After the curtain calls, the audience and artists could mingle in the lounge, grab a snack at a food truck and take in performances by some of Vancouver’s hottest burlesque, spoken word artists and musical acts.
