About the Event

ASHTAR Theatre (Ramallah) has called for support from theatre companies worldwide to host readings of “The Gaza Monologues” on November 29th. Rumble Theatre, PTC, and Theatre Conspiracy will be hosting this event in solidarity.

The Gaza Monologues are testimonies written by ASHTAR youth in 2010, after the first war on the Gaza Strip. Tragically, these monologues are still accurate today. They are highlighting the horrors, hopes and resilience of the courageous Gazans to a broader audience, bringing out the voices of children and people in Gaza.

We invite you to witness these monologues as part of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on November 29th, read by local artists and community members.

Symbiotic relationships tell us stories of survival, reciprocity, and rivalry. Our earth is a complex mix of species inhabiting each other’s spaces while in constant interaction. May it be mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic, life always finds a way to thrive and subsist.

Join us on our sixth rendition of our New Creation Nights, in which we share stories old, new, fiction and true!

The evening will showcase 4 new works in a cabaret format, breaking in between each performance. Amidst the breaks the audience will have the opportunity to check out the Garage Gallery featuring various art installations, and enjoy complimentary Vietnamese Banh Mi’s from our friends at Ba-Le.

Doors will open at 7:00pm. Show up early to enjoy the festivities! Performances start at 7:30pm.

New Works

Stampede on Vinyl by André Bessette

Merging of toe, heel,
sound, steel,
flesh, bone,
style, tone,
shoulders and boulders,
hips and billets,
grandmother, grandson
a little bit of fish
and interconnectedness.

Emergency Mushroom Report/Learning Fear in Omphalotus by David Bloom

‘Emergency Mushroom Report’ and ‘Learning Fear in Omphalotus’ are two linked speculative fiction plays being developed by David Bloom. The first will be a live online, interactive presentation; the second will be performed in a tent.

It’s 300 years from now, and two societies have coped with the Climate Crisis in radically different ways.
The Mountain is an underground escape bunker founded by tech billionaires in 2030. They planned to emerge and repopulated the world with an ideal technocratic society. The leader, The Speaker s the last surviving founder. When an exploratory expedition returns with data from the last 300 years, she must face the possibility that humanity has survived the crisis by working closely with another species. Is survival worth the cost?
Omphalotus is a society that survived by working symbiotically with fungi. Armilara teaches the oldest of the young about how they survived, and what dangers await them beyond the boundaries of their society.

In The Symbiotic Cabaret, we spend time with both Armilara and The Speaker and discover their radically different responses to the possibility of humanity and fungi coming together.
Potentially a mirror image to ‘The Last Of Us’

Kookie with a K by Maheem Bista

Kookie owes everything to Kousin. Her name, her new life in Canada, her education and all of her fondest childhood memories. Kookie with a K is a snippet into Kookie’s life as she ponders how could she repay her loved ones without asking for help any more.

Maheem Bista – Playwright
Peihwen Tai – role of Kookie

A Captivating Woman by Natasha Chew

A one-woman meta-theatrical show (in-progress!) revolving around Annalyn, who makes an irreversible mistake and faces the court of the audience, attempting to seek catharsis while struggling for control over her own narrative. Fighting between her need to perform a sympathetic character and her need for catharsis, she fumbles through her life, turning over pieces to find that perhaps like Theseus’ boat, it may no longer belong to her. Under your watchful gaze she is a woman “”snapped””, a ritualistic undoing, and anything in-between.

Content Warning: gun violence, (internalized) misogyny, descriptions of cannibalism.

Natasha Chew – Playwright
Jesse Del Fierro – Dramaturg
Sarah Roa – role of Annalyn

FAMILY / They do not Come Back by Blake Hobson-Dimas

In an exploration of the meaning of family, Five performers react to their own descriptions of their homes as they dress themselves in handmade crocheted costumes and embark on the transitional journey from person to clown.

They do not come back.

Inspired by Ursula K. le Guin’s “”The Ones That Walk Away from Omelas”” this crocheted scene depicts the human inclination toward reckless indulgence, the refusal to admit the banality of evil, and the ones that walk ahead into darkness.”

The Parasite by Anju Singh

In The Parasite, virtual selves prey on the attention, interaction, and dependence of their organic counterparts in order to survive. But when typical organic living experiences, such as aging or losing self-composure rise to the surface and threaten the connection between realities, the virtual self must reduce, minimize and eventually murder the will of the organic self, entrapping it eternally in a static and virtual cocoon.

Content Warning: Volumes can be intense.

Disconnect / Parasite by Sarah Pryor

There is a disconnect between how we live now and our true nature. Indigenous cultures lived in harmony with the planet and in tune with their own bodies for hundreds of years, before the western world and its material desires took over, draining us of our humanity. What sinister forces have brought us here, and how do we find a way back to our connection with the universe?

The work explores themes of spirituality, destruction and greed; examining the insidious progress of capitalism and the aged men who profit. There is a reflection on ancient spiritual practices, reminding us of our infinite connection to everything and everyone around us.

Projects

May All Beings Shed Their Shame
by Sally Zori

We live in a day where trans people are ruthlessly vilified as perverts, sadists, and pedophiles. Based on these outrageous and false accusations they are being denied healthcare, stripped of their civil rights, and murdered everyday. However, the real threat lies behind cathedral doors…church and state. The real threat lies in the hands of obtuse politicians and archaic religious figures spewing hateful drivel at the pulpit.

This is a story told in 3 movements. Violence. A love song. Reclamation.

About Sally Zori

Hi, I am Sally Zori. I am a transgender Iraqi (They/Them/Their) multi-disciplinary artist born in Baghdad, raised in the United Arab Emirates and different parts of Canada. Today, I live on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples–Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

At the age of 11, I picked up my first drum, the Doumbek (middle eastern goblet drum), and never stopped. By the time I was 18, I’d played several instruments including congas, bongos, timbales, drum kit, and guitar. I pursued a career in music, performing, and touring while attending the University of Windsor to study Film & Television. My musical journey took me all over Canada and the world, performing in international arts festivals; The Sydney Festival in Australia, Dublin Fringe in Ireland, and the PuSh Festival in Vancouver, and was once lucky enough to have the opportunity (one new years eve in ’08) to be the percussionist for Aretha Franklin.

In early 2017, I started my own content creation company (Zori Media) which led to my falling back in love with making videos. With a film degree under my belt and a new found love for making videos, I’m starting to experiment with video composite art on collaborations with other Vancouver based artists. Today, I’m still a session musician, percussionist, and content creator just trying to get through the pandemic. I am currently working on my story of being a third culture kid exploring my relationship with ‘home’ and how to heal. Working with film, the piece hopes to incorporate spoken word with live musical underscoring.

From The Corner
by Luz Fleming

The Soundsystem brings music and culture and history across many boundaries, exposes lies and brings a counter narrative to the ultra colonial and capitalistic one we have been spoon fed for centuries. Luz Fleming was drawn to Shanae Sodhi’s written parts for this project because of their blunt and unapologetic lyrics and subject matter, not far removed from Luz’s own experiences growing up on the inner city streets of New York and San Francisco. Shanae was inspired to write and record his lyrics to a Benny The Butcher song called “Who Are You”, produced by Daringer of Griselda. Daringer’s track features a haunting sample of the song “Take A Look At Yourself (Before You Frown On Someone Else)” by White Heat. In the spirit of Soundsystem and Riddim culture, Luz Fleming has taken the same chord structure and lead melody of “Take A Look At Yourself”, unpacked them, and remade a new “version” for Shanae and his partners to use as their backing track. With the addition of extensive sound design, editing, and effects, Luz brings the listener into an entirely new and visceral storytelling landscape.

About Luz Fleming

Colorado born, Bay Area raised, Brooklyn True Yorker, East Van local. Luz Mob brings the heat to every set with vibes from Hip-Hop to Rub-A-Dub, Cumbia to Coladeira, Deep Funk to Disco. Just try not to dance!

When My Father Becomes a Cobra
by Anju Singh

When My Father Becomes a Cobra is a sound art adaptation composed by Anju Singh of a poem of the same name composed by writer Roshni Riar. The piece travels through the poem using electronics, voice, violin, and other traditional instruments to create a sound experience that aims to honour the spirit of the poem.

The sound artist was drawn to the poem for its vivid imagery which inspired the creation of sounds for the piece as well as re-working parts of the voice to reflect the content and reading of the poem. While experimental techniques were used, the piece intends to draw listeners in so that the sound work is as relatable as the poem’s content – a stark and heavy reality that sits uncomfortably but locked in the present. The sound composition holds the piece in the same universe as the poem itself – in a realm beyond space and time.

About Anju Singh & The Nausea

Composer, musician and performer Anju Singh is bringing her combination of chamber-doom and noise – created via violin and electronics – to Sled Island as The Nausea. Easy-listening it is not. Rather, Singh is pushing the sonic boundaries of her instruments into the furthest reaches of the halls of extreme music to “channel doubt and discomfort, venting and volume, hypnosis and requiems.” It’s something best understood out-loud.

Kookum’s Sound System
by DJ Kookum

About DJ Kookum

Cheyanna Kootenhayoo AKA Kookum is a DJ and multi media maker from the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, and Cold Lake First Nations, their maternal Denesuline traditional territory. Based out of Vancouver BC, Kookum has been making a name for their self across the country and is no stranger in the community.

Kookum is an open format DJ inspired by EDM and Hip Hop music. This diverse-mix-diva is a force on the decks and always keeps the party hype, fresh, and unpredictable.

Kookum tours nationally and internationally with the Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Holds down weekly DJ residencies. Facilitates videography and DJ workshops, operates sound and lighting for community dance parties, and works with youth as a DJ mentor.
Kookum has been a video editor for just over 10 years editing television, documentaries and promotional videos. Kookum is also the music supervisor for the children’s television series called ‘Coyote Science’ and host’s the Immersive Knowledge Transfer Podcast produced by the Indigenous Matriarchs 4 Media Lab.

Sandra, Said Like A Cuss
by Richard Brown

The piece reflects images of the background of the poet and the musician. Reflections of life in the Caribbean and Canada. Based on events that deeply affect the lives of all people. The images evolved, how deeply personal and yet, universal.

Stages of Transformation is a multi-year project brings together theatre artists, arts workers, and creative communities from across so-called Canada to explore how abolition and transformative justice can impact theatre-making in process, content, form, and dissemination. “I believe that without the framework of abolition, all of our work in the theatre sector to achieve racial justice, gender justice, disability justice, trans justice, climate justice, and all other forms of justice, will fall short. Abolition offers a rigorous lens through which to examine these issues, and pathways toward change. Like theatre itself, abolition is about the power of human relationships, collaboration, generative conflict, and imagination,” says Stages of Transformation curator Nikki Shaffeeullah.

The Stages of Transformation Creative Cohort:
A process-driven creative initiative, in partnership with Chromatic Theatre, Gwaandak Theatre, lemonTree creations, Rumble, TODOS Productions, and Undercurrent Creations. Stages of Transformation has commissioned five artists to undertake theatrical creation processes that explore the project’s themes of abolition and transformative justice. The resident artists are: Raven John, Keira Nolting, Sobia Shaheen Shaikh, Kris Vanessa Teo Xin-En (张欣恩), and Ravyn Wngz. Additionally, Yasmine Espert will work as an embedded critic alongside the resident artists, creating a written piece that will document and reflect on their creative exploration. Photography and multimedia artist Raven Davis will also spend time with the SoT Creative Cohort, documenting and reflecting on their process.

Tremors is proud to present the works-in-progress from the Creative Cohort as part of this year’s festival.

Braiding Peonies
by Sobia Shaheen Shaikh

Braiding Peonies (working title) is a play-in-progress about a family who is dealing with the aftermath of racist, anti-Muslim hate in a violent encounter directed at a group of Muslim teenagers. Using transformative justice lenses, the play explores the themes of justice, protection and healing through the experience of the protagonist, Sadiqa (mother), and her 17-year-old, Samreen, as the family grapples with a crisis of trust in institutions that fail to provide meaningful resolution. The family finds support in racialized and transformative justice communities, as they begin to dream of radical and relational possibilities.

feel ur feels (CRINGE LIBERATION)
by Kris Vanessa Teo Xin-En (张欣恩)

As we attempt survival in a white supremist and capitalistic society, it is so easy for us to cut ourselves off from how we are feeling, to deny ourselves pleasure, to move at high speeds, to ignore our needs, to bypass processing our lived experiences, to numb sensations that come up, to live through our days on autopilot, to hide who we are and to fast-forward anything that feels uncomfortable.

In her essay Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power, Audre Lorde describes the erotic as a power that “rises from our deepest and nonrational knowledge” and “the measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings.” As someone with a lot of feelings all the time, I was deeply moved by this. It made me question when and how I tap into my strongest feelings, gut instincts, and my deepest, nonrational knowledge. It made me wonder about what the potential was if I trusted, listened and took action on these feelings a little more, a whole lot more. How would our relationships with each other evolve if we practiced this deep listening with one another? How big and wide are the possibilities of community and relationship building if we were all peering this intently into ourselves, and moving with this knowledge?

Right now, I have more questions than answers, and I might never find all the answers, and certainly not on my own. But I find comfort and awe in adrienne marie brown’s words: “Emergence notices the way small actions and connections create complex systems, patterns that become ecosystems and societies. Emergence is our inheritance as a part of this universe; it is how we change. Emergent strategy is how we intentionally change in ways that grow our capacity to embody the just and liberated worlds we long for.”

Creating feel ur feels (CRINGE LIBERATION) is a way for me to practice the small actions and connections of listening to the deep feeling and nonrational eroticism within me, and to practice with my friendos, pals and buddy buds, through conversation, stopping to notice what’s around me, in me, and to follow the curiosities that come up along the way.

About the Creator
David Kaye is an award-winning actor and producer living, working, and playing on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. David has continued to work in film, television, voice overs and theatre for almost 30 years. In 2008, he branched out into production as well, and since then has had a hand in producing more than 50 productions from commercials and web series to TV movies and a feature film. David is also an acting coach and teacher at Shoreline Studios. Most recently, David has become willfully whisked away with written word wizardry and its older, obvious, perpetual pen pal, oratory performance (he loves a little alliteration).
Order of the New Hyphae is an immersive, devised performance that reconstructs ecological thought and post human spiritualities through the lens of an apocalyptic fungi cult.

About the Creator
Samantha Walters is an emerging interdisciplinary performer, writer, and creator based on xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) lands. She was born in England and raised in Hong Kong.
The ghosts within us/les fantômes qui nous habitent

Ghosts Within is an audiovisual performance that explores the weight of cultural and religious background on individuals in the diaspora through electronic music, Arabic themes and 3D visuals.

Time and distance collapse in this performance, which draws on sharing traditions dating back hundreds of years to mix them with modern electronic productions and visuals. This is music of primitive essence and nameless nostalgia, full of electronic frequencies that seem to touch an ancient pain in our lives. In an identity that is never totally Canadian, nor totally foreign.

Jiv is “Canadian. ” And “Indian. ” And “Hindu. ” And “West Indian. ” “Trinidadian,” too. Or maybe he’s just colonized. He’s not the “white boy” he was teased as within his immigrant household. Especially since his Nova Scotian neighbours seemed to think he was Black. Except for the Black people—they were pretty sure he wasn’t. He’s not an Arab, and allegedly not a Muslim—at least that’s what he started claiming after 9/11. Whatever he is, the public education system was able to offer him the chance to learn about his culture from a coffee table book on “Eastern Mythology. ” And then he had a religious epiphany while delivering a calf in Trinidad. By now, Jiv’s collected a lot of observations about trying to find your place in your world. In this funny, fresh, and skeptical take on the identity play, Jivesh Parasram blends personal storytelling and ritual to offer the Hin-dos and Hin-don’ts within the intersections of all of his highly hyphenated cultures. This story asks the gut-punching questions: What divides us? Who is served by the constructs of cultural identity? And what are we willing to accept in the desire to belong? Then again—it doesn’t really matter, because we are all Jiv.

Her 2022 debut album, “What Holds Us Together?” is a sonic journey that synergizes folk, pop, world music, experimental soundscapes and poetry.
