What is Rumble Sound System?

Rumble Sound System is an experimental project from Rumble Theatre funded by the Canada Council for the Arts “Digital Now” program. Taking its inspiration from the origins of Dub music and Sound System Culture, we’re seeing what happens if we take text, and then liberally repurpose it to make new pieces.

Rumble Sound System project features works by:
DJ Kookum
DJ Luz Mob
Anju Singh
Sally Zori
Richard Brown

About the Live Performances

The Nausea

Composer, musician and performer Anju Singh is bringing her combination of chamber-doom and noise – created via violin and electronics – to Sled Island as The Nausea. Easy-listening it is not. Rather, Singh is pushing the sonic boundaries of her instruments into the furthest reaches of the halls of extreme music to “channel doubt and discomfort, venting and volume, hypnosis and requiems.” It’s something best understood out-loud.

MRD3 a.k.a. Mad Riddim Dub Trio

MRD3 aka Mad Riddim Dub Trio features the engine room (drums bass and guitar) from Vancouver’s favourite reggae/dub group Mad Riddim.

Forming prior to the pandemic as a way to explore classic reggae albums via a heavy, minimalist and improvised dub aesthetic, MRD3 has begun its foray into post-lockdown live performance.

If Sly & Robbie met Khruangbin for a spliff at a party on the Outer Rim, MRD3 would be the band playing.

The Rumble Sound System Band

The band is a response to the the Rumble System Project led by creative producer and musical director Rob Thomson. Featuring a line up of some of the cities most exciting musicians the group will be crafting up a new suite of atmospheric groove music.

Jordan Waunch – Vocals
Cordelia – Vocals
Miguel Maravilla – Samples/Vocals/Guitar
Mike WT Allen – Sax/Keyboards
Rob Thomson – Bass
Max Ley – Drums
