Medea (In Development)
August 12- 15, 2019
By Carmen Aguirre, Adapted from Euripides’ Medea
Performance Works, Granville Island | 1218 Cartwright St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3R8
About the Show
Development continues for Rumble’s current commissioned adaptation: Medea by award-winning playwright, actor, and author Carmen Aguirre. For her reimagining of the story Carmen transports Euripides’ Greek tragedy to Vancouver’s Little Saigon in the 1980s, into the heart of the Vietnamese diaspora, where the effects of war, violence, displacement, and trauma have followed.
As part of the play’s development and production, we are actively collaborating with the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Society (SEACHS) and members of Vancouver’s Vietnamese community.
Carmen’s Medea is the third script to be commissioned from Rumble’s adaptation program, following in the acclaimed footsteps of Governor General’s Award-winning script Indian Arm by Hiro Kanagawa (2015) and The Society for the Destitute Presents Titus Bouffonius by Colleen Murphy (2017).
Medea is in development throughout this year, with an aim to premiere the production in our 2020-21 season.
