In Sound of the Beast, Toronto emcee Belladonna the Blest (Dora Award-winning playwright Donna-Michelle St. Bernard) shares stories of coming up in Toronto’s budding hip-hop scene, the intersections between conscious rap and political activism, and the sacrifices we make for the things we believe in. Part concert/part theatre the show blends the personal and the political, with a bold and brutally honest take about policing in Black communities.

Sound of the Beast is a part of the 54ology: Donna-Michelle’s commitment to create one performance work drawn from each country in Africa. She does not write plays that are literally set in the chosen country, but are rather evoking a thread from that country’s narrative. In this case, it is not a play about Weld-El 15 and his circumstance in Tunisia. Instead, Donna-Michelle has used his situation to prompt her to look at her role as an artist and a citizen within Toronto’s current social and political situation. She is looking at her own life here and the life of people around her.

“Go experience this intense, memorable constellation of storytelling — you’ll be the better and the wiser for it.
