We have some bittersweet news to share with you all.

THE BITTER

After four years at Rumble Theatre, we are sad to say goodbye to Rumbler, colleague, and friend Jarin Schexnider (Managing Director).

From our Artistic Director, Jiv Parasram:

“It’s always bittersweet when a Rumbler goes. It’s sad to not see a friend day to day, but on the plus side, as long as I’ve been here, whenever someone leaves it’s usually for a good reason.

Working with Jarin the past 4 years has been a great opportunity – their curatorial influence helped to push Rumble deeper into multidisciplinary territory. We wish nothing but joy and success for Jarin and WhatLab – and are excited to now freely and shamelessly pitch them more collaborations on the future!!”

From outgoing Managing Director, Jarin Schexnider:

“I’m so grateful for my time at Rumble, and the collaborators and colleagues I met along the way. The way they consider and make space for community feels so special and unparalleled, it was a privilege to hold that work and support it in my own little way. I grew as an administrator thanks to those I worked alongside, and I’m excited to use that knowledge as I go all in on my work at What Lab.”

THE SWEET

Taking on the helm of Managing Director, is our current Managing Producer and long time Rumbler: Maria Zarrillo! They bring a wealth of experience in producing and Stage Management, and has worked at Rumble Theatre in different capacities over the years. Congrats Maria, we’re so happy to have you!

From incoming Managing Director Maria Zarrillo:

“In 2021, freshly on the job hunt, I cold-called a handful of folks I admired—Rumble was at the top of that list. Twenty minutes after hitting send, I got a call from Jiv to help with an upcoming cabaret and the rest is history. What’s kept me close to Rumble ever since is our commitment to socially and politically responsive work, and its deep investment in people, process, and experimentation. It’s rare to find an organization that so genuinely prioritizes humanity across every level—from how we work with artists to how our staff structure operates. I feel incredibly lucky to be working alongside such a powerhouse group of colleagues and collaborators, and to support the vital, boundary-pushing work that Rumble champions.”

We have advertised the position or positions as “Artistic Producer” as it covers the widest range of duties and responsibilities. The exact job title will ultimately be determined based on one’s application and completion of Rumble’s recruitment phase.

Read on for more details…

Deadline for application: JULY 4th 2023

–

Organizational Description

Rumble creates, presents, and produces contemporary performance. Working in a decentralized collective model, Rumble is committed to prioritizing projects and initiatives that utilize art to expand collective imagination, collaboration, and build a deeper understanding of relationality and community.

For over 30 years Rumble has operated as a chameleon in our local community, with a strong priority on sector development. Though our artistic vision has morphed along with our leadership since our inception, one of Rumble’s core aims has always been to respond to our ecology using our infrastructure to enhance, strengthen, and develop the independent theatre community in Metro Vancouver.

Mandate

To produce, develop, and present contemporary theatre and performance, and to enable opportunity for innovation within arts and culture.

Core company values

Curiosity: Maintain an active and open approach to people, thought, expression, ideas, and worldviews.

Courage: Have courage to destabilize norms, encourage risk, engage in grey areas, respond to need, and to operate irrespective of precedent.

Reciprocity: Respect and trust in our collaborations, and relationships built on equitably fostering mutual benefit.

Territorial context

Rumble Theatre has operated on the traditional, unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations since its founding in 1991. Long before Rumble, and longer still before the confederation of Canada, the territory we operate on was home to a thriving Indigenous culture and ways of being. Though the maintenance of this way of life has been continuously challenged by colonization and occupation, the Indigenous cultures of this territory continue to this day with vitality.

As a long-time producer of Canadian Culture and core grant recipient from federal, provincial, and municipal funders, we recognize our positioning within the history and the ongoing realities of a larger nationalist project of occupation. We engage with this position critically, acknowledging and challenging its limitations. Rumble as an organization is committed to our staff and board growing their understanding of and engagement with the knowledge of this territory, its peoples, and the ways of knowing and being that continue to care for and heal this territory.

Job Description

Hello! This is written by your prospective co-worker, I’m a real person!

Here’s the deal, we’ve got some team members moving onto some new great things, and we’ve got a bunch of tasks that need to be done.

Rather than prescribing a specific position, we figured we would list them here and allow applicants the chance to construct the job that they would ideally like to do. And also tell us how many work hours they think that would be.

Based on what needs to be done, we believe that this is approximately 1.2 FTE (full-time-equivalent) worth of labour. This translates into a total of about 6 days/week or approximately 48 hours/Week.

Full Time positions at Rumble are those exceeding approximately 4.5 days/week. And so the total amount of work to be done exceeds one Full-Time-Position.

Actual work hours: due to the ebbs and flows of production schedules, there may be some weeks that require full time hours, and other times that require less, and so “days per week” is a guideline. Any time exceeding an agreed upon work schedule will be compensated with time in lieu, or supplemental contracts where appropriate.

Salary: To be negotiated according to proposed position and hours.

Explanation of organisational pay scale:

Rumble currently maintains the following payscale and endeavours to meet or exceed Living Wage for the city of Vancouver as calculated by Living Wage For Families BC.

Contractors: $25/hr- short term, usually project specific or task based work not regarding long term oversight or the managing of others.

Managers: $28/h, or approx $10,752/day annually – departmental management or jobs requiring long term oversight of projects or initiatives including managing external contractors.

Executive/Leadership: $30/hr or approx $11,520/day annually – Executive representatives of the organisation responsible for long term global oversight, employee and contractor management, strategic planning, and development of governance policies in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

Job Titles

We have advertised the position or positions as “Artistic Producer” as it covers the widest range of duties and responsibilities. The exact job title will ultimately be determined based on one’s application, and completion of Rumble’s recruitment phase.

Estimated Work Times
Applicants should apply noting their best estimate, or if unsure, can indicate an estimate of a part-time or full-time commitment. Salary estimates are not required.

Examples:

Rumble is seeking a Project Manager to join the team. This is a 14-month contract with the possibility of becoming a staff position. Although this position is advertised at approximately 25hr/week, the exact weekly schedule will fluctuate depending on activities.

Deadline for application: April 22, 2022

Organization description

Rumble creates, presents, and produces contemporary performance. Working in a decentralized collective model, Rumble is committed to prioritizing projects and initiatives that utilize art to expand collective imagination, collaboration, and build a deeper understanding of relationality and community.

For 30 years Rumble has operated as a chameleon in our local community, with a strong priority on sector development.

Though the maintenance of this way of life has been continuously challenged by colonization and occupation, it continues to this day.

As a long-time producer of Canadian Culture and core grant recipient from federal, provincial, and municipal funders, we recognize our positioning within the history and the ongoing realities of a larger nationalist project of occupation. We engage with this position critically, acknowledging and challenging its limitations. Rumble as an organization is committed to our staff and board growing their understanding and engagement with the knowledge of this territory, its peoples, and the ways of being that continue to care for and heal this territory.

Company culture

A note from your potential co-workers, Jiv Parasram (Artistic Director). Christie Watson (Managing Director) & Jarin Schexnider (Operations Manager):

Hey! We offer a pretty laid-back vibe when it comes to how we work and are always open to the question, “Why do we do things this way?”

Service is a good way to think of what we do, since we tend to spend a lot of time helping folx out who have varied levels of experience with theatre and are often navigating the seas of a larger system to do their work. We’re committed to building autonomy in the Independent Arts scene right now, and equipping Independent Artists with the skills they need to actively participate and navigate the public funding world.

Rumble is people oriented. The work itself is less about centering the “show” but more about hosting low barrier events however we can within our means where the “show” is part of the larger event. It’s a small paradigm shift, but with big implications.

Also – we are very supportive of our colleagues’ practices outside the workplace whatever they be. It’s important for us that staff can pursue anything that helps them live a well-rounded life. It’s a very small core staff, and we hold each other accountable – including in our pursuits outside the workplace.

Job description

Reporting to and working directly with the Managing Director and Artistic Director, the Project Manager will be responsible for the staffing, managing, and executing the transport, set up, and strike of community led and artistic events occurring in Rumble’s modular tent infrastructure. In addition to set up and strike, on a case-by-case basis the Project Manager will be required to work some community events as a representative/ambassador for Rumble.

Additional duties may include training and supervising teams for the successful execution of the program, and some mentorship activities in collaboration with the Rumble Core staff.

Commitment to pay equity

Though the Project Manager will report for the time being to the Artistic Director and Managing Director, the position is considered managerial and will draw on leadership skills. Compensation for the Project Manager position is scaled at pay equity with all core employees.

Professional development

Rumble supports and will contribute to professional development that is important to the job and your practice.

Dependent care

Rumble supports and contributes in a limited capacity to costs associated with dependent care for employees to support the execution of their duties.

Rumble is accepting submissions for its third New Creation Night. It’s something like a storytelling night, only the stories don’t have to be true. But they can be, because there’s always a little truth in fiction.

We offered you “Liminal Magic” and “Lupercalia” events that paid respects to the night. It was underneath the moonlight, that magic space in-between this world and another. Vibing on a polarizing frequency, for the third iteration we are honouring the magic of Spring Equinox, “Ostara.” It will pay respects to the daylight, when the sun is exactly above the equator, when day and night are in harmonic balance. It wakes hibernation and invites re-emergence, rebirth and renewal. It honours that ethereal time of day when the world is quiet and the light breaks through the darkness. It’s a solar ritual. It’s equilibrium. It’s the prospect of a bright, bold, bodacious beginning – it’s dawn magic.

We strongly encourage works including:
Creative Fiction
Futurism and Afrofuturism
Storytelling and Fable
Underrepresented and Experimental Forms of Storytelling

Works should have a maximum running time of 12 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants whose project draws on or shares traditional knowledge must be able to verify adequate permissions to share this story in public.

We strive to make our events accessible to all artists, including D/deaf artists, artists with lived experiences of disability, neurodivergent artists and artists on the mental health spectrum; and are happy to make accommodations based on the access needs of our selected artists, including ASL interpretation. We especially encourage submissions from QTIBPOC.

Our first event “Liminal Magic” paid respects to the night. It was Hallow’s Eve. It was Samhain. It was underneath the moonlight, that magic space in-between this world and another. Vibing on that same frequency, for the second iteration, we are honouring the origins of V Day “Lupercalia.” It will pay respects to the original heartbeat, sacrifices in love, the liminal space in love. It’s red. It’s revenge. It’s raw. It’s rare. It’s radical. It’s the rhythm of the night – its own kind of magic.

Vancouver Creative Space Society (C-Space) is requesting proposals from experienced arts and social profit consultants to support our work developing a model for sustainable affordable arts space in Vancouver.

BACKGROUND
In 2009, a dream between four kindred theatre organizations was realized when Boca Del Lupo, Electric Company, Neworld and Rumble opened Progress Lab 1422, a 7,000 ft2 centre for creation and development in East Vancouver. Guided by a deeply felt spirit of collaboration, community and resource-sharing, PL1422 quickly became a sought-after cultural facility, accommodating not only the tenant companies but external rentals and partnerships. To support this growth, the Vancouver Creative Space Society (C-Space) was founded to manage PL1422 and other possible future cultural property development projects in the Lower Mainland. Now, in 2020, PL1422 remains home to three of the founding companies—Electric Company, Neworld, and Rumble—while welcoming Company 605, Playwrights Theatre Centre, rice & beans theatre, Tara Cheyenne Performance and Theatre Conspiracy into the fold. PL1422 continues to be a vital presence in our community, providing exceptional, readily available, and affordable creative space to the theatre industry and the wider arts sector.

THE PROJECT
C-Space is seeking a consultant to support our work creating affordable space for arts and culture in an increasingly hostile economic climate. We are the in the process of exploring operational models, policy environments and relationships with government and funders that can promote stable, sustainable operations for arts and culture facilities. This project is responding not only to our own imminent need for long-term solutions to increasing costs, but to the reality that many arts spaces are closing or have closed in recent years due to ballooning costs and the pressures of gentrification and development. We are seeking a radical solution to a sector-wide problem. This project will build on the work already done by the team at C-Space and others in our community to develop a model for sustainable operations of arts and cultural space and develop the resources to fund that model.

Activities will include:
• Becoming familiar with C-Space’s existing structure and challenges,
• Building on existing work and initiatives to develop long-term solutions,
• Working with the board of directors to create a plan for long-term stability,
• Identifying additional sources of funding,
• Consolidating a case for support,
• Identifying municipal and provincial policies that may support or do interfere with long-
term stability,
• Work with the board of directors on lobbying efforts to achieve favourable policy
changes,
• Document all findings and efforts from the project and deliver a final report.

THE PERSON
We are seeking Requests for Proposals from consultants experienced working with the social profit sector who are passionate about the place of arts in the city. The ideal candidate will be well versed in other initiatives locally, nationally, and internationally that are seeking long-term solutions for sustainable, affordable space. Familiarity with City of Vancouver land policies and plans will be an asset, as will a history of fighting for transformative change.

Vancouver Creative Space Society is dedicated to a policy of non-discrimination on any basis including race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, gender identification, sexual orientation, class, and physical ability.

THE BUDGET
A maximum of $30,000 is available for consultation fees, plus a small additional budget for ancillary costs such as meeting supplies, honouraria and communications.

PROJECT TIMELINE
We are looking for someone to begin working with our team as soon as possible. Proposals are requested by November 30, 2021. The project should be complete, including documentation of findings by October 31, 2022.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:
• The Consultant will be engaged as an independent contractor.
• The Consultant can provided administrative work space as necessary and is asked to provide
their own computer.
• The Consultant will work on a flexible, self-directed schedule, liaising with C-Space board and
staff.

Rumble is seeking an Operations Manager to join the team. Read on for all the details.

Deadline for application: Monday, June 14, 2021

Organization description

Rumble creates, presents, and produces contemporary performance. Working in a decentralized collective model, Rumble is committed to prioritizing projects and initiatives that utilize art to expand collective imagination, collaboration, and build a deeper understanding of relationality and community.

For 30 years Rumble has operated as a chameleon in our local community, with a strong priority on sector development.

A note from your potential co-workers, Jiv Parasram (Artistic Director) & Christie Watson (Managing Director):

Compensation for the Operations Manager position is scaled at pay equity with all core employees.
